Bulgaria’s EnduroSat Is Turning Satellite Manufacturing Into a High-Volume Business
European space technology company EnduroSat is making a major push to change how satellites are manufactured after securing more than $200 million in new funding.
The Bulgarian company announced a $205 million funding round on September 16, with the money going toward larger spacecraft, new manufacturing infrastructure and expansion across Europe and the United States.
EnduroSat’s approach is based on standardisation.
Traditional satellite projects often involve highly customised spacecraft designed specifically for a particular mission. That can make development expensive and time-consuming.
EnduroSat wants to apply a more industrial approach.
The company is developing standardized spacecraft platforms that can be manufactured in larger quantities.
The idea is similar to how other technology industries moved from individually engineered products toward standardized mass production.
EnduroSat believes satellites can increasingly be produced with the repeatability of drones rather than as one-off engineering projects.
The company plans to build a new high-volume manufacturing facility in the United States while also expanding its European operations.
That expansion comes as demand for satellites continues to grow.
Companies are increasingly using satellites for communications, Earth observation, navigation, scientific research and other services.
Lower production costs could therefore create opportunities for organisations that previously could not afford to operate their own spacecraft.
EnduroSat has already built significant experience in the market.
The company says it has launched more than 100 satellites and delivered over 200 spacecraft for missions around the world.
Its latest funding round will allow it to move into larger spacecraft while increasing production capacity.
The company is also targeting a dramatic reduction in the cost of satellite data.
It aims to eventually bring the cost down to approximately $1 per gigabyte, compared with hundreds of dollars per gigabyte today.
That could make satellite data more accessible to businesses outside the traditional aerospace industry.
Agricultural companies, logistics providers, environmental organisations and mapping companies could all potentially benefit from cheaper access to information collected from orbit.
Europe could also benefit from the expansion.
A stronger domestic satellite manufacturing industry would give European companies greater control over critical space infrastructure and create opportunities for local aerospace suppliers.
The company is now preparing for a significant scaling phase.
The challenge will be maintaining quality and reliability while increasing production volume.
Satellites are complex systems, and failures after launch can be extremely expensive.
