Space Cargo Becomes First Customer for SpaceX’s New Starfall Orbital Return Service

SpaceX’s new Starfall business has signed its first known customer, opening another potential commercial market for the company’s growing space transportation operations.

The customer is Luxembourg-based Space Cargo, which plans to use SpaceX’s Starfall system to transport materials from orbit back to Earth.

Space Cargo is targeting a 2028 mission aboard the first commercial mission of SpaceX’s Starship. The mission would use a Starfall capsule to carry customer payloads into space and return them safely to Earth.

Starfall is designed around a relatively simple idea: make it easier for companies to send products and experiments into space and bring them back.

The capsule is essentially an aluminium housing protected by a heatshield roughly three metres wide. The system is intended for customers that want to conduct research or manufacture products in the microgravity environment of space before returning the results to Earth.

Space Cargo plans to place its BentoBox system inside the Starfall capsule.

The BentoBox can hold payloads belonging to different customers, allowing several companies or research organizations to share transportation costs.

Space Cargo says its existing systems can currently handle around 200 kilograms of payload. With Starship and Starfall, the company expects to eventually handle payloads measured in tonnes.

That difference could be important for the commercial space industry.

Sending materials into orbit is expensive, and returning them to Earth can be even more complicated. A dedicated commercial return service could make space-based manufacturing and research more accessible to companies that cannot justify developing their own spacecraft.

One potential customer group is the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry.

Microgravity can create conditions that are difficult or impossible to reproduce on Earth. Researchers have long investigated whether certain drugs, biological materials and manufacturing processes can benefit from space-based production.

Other industries could also benefit.

Space Cargo says potential customers for its first mission include companies in life sciences and biotechnology. Space-based manufacturing could also be used for specialised materials, including certain types of fibre-optic cable that can benefit from production in microgravity.

The Space Cargo agreement is notable because it represents the first known customer deal for SpaceX’s Starfall program.

The business emerged earlier this year and conducted a capsule demonstration in June. SpaceX itself had not previously announced when Starship would conduct its first commercial mission.

The planned 2028 mission therefore represents an important step toward SpaceX’s broader vision of commercialising Starship.

Starship is being developed as a much larger next-generation launch vehicle capable of carrying significant payloads into orbit.

If Starfall can operate alongside Starship as a reusable commercial return service, SpaceX could eventually offer businesses something closer to a complete logistics network: launch products into orbit, conduct research or manufacturing there, and return them to Earth.

That would represent a significant expansion beyond traditional satellite launches.

It could also create new opportunities for European companies.

Space Cargo’s Luxembourg base puts a European company at the centre of the first announced Starfall customer mission, demonstrating that commercial demand for space-based manufacturing is not limited to the United States.

The 2028 timeline is still several years away, and both Starship and Starfall have to prove that the systems can operate reliably.

But the agreement provides an early glimpse of what the next phase of commercial space technology could look like.

Instead of space being primarily a destination for satellites and astronauts, companies could increasingly treat orbit as another place to manufacture, experiment, process materials and conduct business.
