German Deeptech Startup MuRay Raises €7.1 Million to Bring Muon Imaging to Industry

Inspecting large industrial structures can be difficult, particularly when important components are hidden behind thick materials or located inside equipment that cannot easily be dismantled.

German deeptech company MuRay is developing imaging technology designed to help organisations examine such structures using muons, naturally occurring particles that can pass through substantial amounts of matter.

The Hamburg-based company has secured €7.1 million in funding to bring its technology to industrial applications.

What Are Muons?

Muons are subatomic particles produced when cosmic rays interact with Earth’s atmosphere.

They constantly reach the planet from space and can travel through materials that would block ordinary visible light.

Scientists have been studying muons for decades because their behaviour can reveal information about the density and internal structure of objects.

By measuring how muons pass through a material, researchers can build images that help identify differences in its internal composition.

This technique is known as muon imaging or muography.

How Muon Imaging Can Help Industry

Traditional inspection methods often rely on cameras, ultrasound, X-rays or other specialised equipment.

Each method has limitations depending on the material, size and location of the object being examined.

Muon imaging offers another approach for certain applications, especially when inspecting large or dense structures.

Potential industrial uses include examining turbines, heavy machinery and other critical infrastructure without having to completely dismantle the equipment.

The technology could help operators investigate internal conditions and identify areas that may require closer inspection.

However, it is not a universal replacement for existing inspection techniques. Its usefulness depends on the size of the structure, measurement conditions and the level of detail required.

Why Industrial Inspection Matters

Industries such as energy, manufacturing and transportation depend on equipment that must operate safely and reliably.

Unexpected equipment failures can lead to expensive repairs, production interruptions and safety risks.

Inspection technologies that provide better information about internal conditions could help organisations plan maintenance more effectively.

For example, identifying a potential problem earlier may allow engineers to investigate it before it develops into a more serious failure.

The Challenge of Commercialising Deeptech

Turning scientific research into a commercially useful product can require significant investment.

A technology may work under laboratory conditions but still need further engineering, testing and validation before customers can rely on it in industrial environments.

MuRay will need to demonstrate that its systems can deliver useful results consistently and fit into existing inspection processes.

The company will also need to establish partnerships with industrial customers that can test the technology in real operating conditions.

What Comes Next?

The €7.1 million investment provides MuRay with additional resources to develop its technology and pursue industrial applications.

If the company can successfully translate muon imaging into dependable inspection services, it could offer industries another way to examine structures that are difficult to access using conventional methods.

The development also demonstrates how fundamental scientific research can create opportunities beyond universities and laboratories, particularly when applied to practical engineering challenges.
