Google Brings Its Motion-Sickness Feature to Samsung Galaxy Phones

Google is expanding one of its more practical Android features beyond Pixel smartphones, bringing Motion Assist to Samsung Galaxy devices running One UI 9.

The feature is designed to help people who experience motion sickness while using their phones as passengers in moving vehicles.

Motion sickness can occur when the eyes and inner ear receive conflicting signals about movement. Looking down at a smartphone while travelling can make the problem worse because the eyes are focused on a stationary screen while the body is experiencing acceleration, turning and braking.

Google’s approach is surprisingly simple.

Motion Assist places small visual bubbles around the edges of the phone’s display. The bubbles move in response to information collected from the device’s motion sensors.

When a vehicle turns, accelerates or brakes, the visual elements move accordingly. The idea is to give the user’s visual system an additional indication that corresponds with the physical movement being experienced inside the vehicle.

The feature was initially associated with Google’s Pixel devices, but Samsung Galaxy phones running One UI 9 are now among the first non-Pixel smartphones to receive it.

That is significant because Samsung’s Galaxy range represents one of the largest Android device ecosystems globally.

A feature that reaches Samsung’s devices therefore has the potential to reach far more users than one restricted to Google’s own hardware.

Motion Assist is specifically intended for passengers, not drivers.

The distinction is important because the feature is designed around the experience of using a smartphone while travelling. Drivers should obviously not be looking at their phones while operating a vehicle.

The technology relies on the phone’s built-in motion sensors rather than requiring additional hardware.

That makes the feature relatively easy to deploy across compatible smartphones because modern devices already contain sensors capable of detecting movement and orientation.

The wider rollout also demonstrates how smartphone companies are increasingly focusing on small quality-of-life improvements rather than relying solely on major hardware upgrades.

For years, smartphone competition has largely revolved around specifications such as processor performance, camera megapixels, display refresh rates and battery capacity.

Features like Motion Assist represent a different approach.

Instead of simply making a phone more powerful, manufacturers are attempting to make it more comfortable and useful in everyday situations.

This could become increasingly important as smartphone hardware becomes more mature.

Consumers are finding fewer reasons to replace a perfectly functional phone simply because a new model has a slightly faster processor or another incremental camera improvement.

Software features that solve specific everyday problems can therefore become a useful way for manufacturers to differentiate their products.

For Samsung users, the arrival of Motion Assist also shows the advantage of maintaining a broader Android ecosystem.

Features developed by Google can eventually make their way to devices from other manufacturers, giving users access to new functionality without necessarily having to purchase Google’s own hardware.

The feature is unlikely to become a headline-grabbing reason for someone to buy a new Galaxy phone.

But for people who regularly experience motion sickness while using their phones in cars, buses or trains, it could prove surprisingly useful.

As smartphones continue to become more deeply integrated into everyday life, these small usability improvements may ultimately matter just as much as headline specifications.
